These have been revolving round the "Hay" case.
On August the 10th the Norwegian 8.8."Hav"
arrived in port. She was known to have a consignment
of arms for the Merchant Volunteers on board and a
permit had been granted for their removal, Dr. Sun,
however, refused to allow her to be unloaded and sent
two gunboate and eventually the "Wing Fung" to guard her,
Great discontent was caused amongst the Volunteers and
to the Yunanese general Fau Shek Sang, who insisted on
the arms being delivered. Dr. Sun stood his ground
however and by his orders and under threat of being
fired on without further notice, the "Hav" proceeded to
Whampoa escorted by the "Wing Fung". There the
ammunitions were unloaded, also 1200 tons of general
cargo destined for Hongkong.
The situation simmered for ten days and then
began to come to a head, The Merchant Volunteers
demanded their arms unconditionally and Sun accused
their Leader. Chan Lin Pak, of traitorous designs
against the Government.
Mr. Chan Lin Pak fled to
Hongkong at the first sign of any danger to himself.
A General Merchants strike was threatened.
